6 Upcoming Kdramas You Should Be Watching – July 2017

July 11, 2017

Hey guys!

Can you believe it’s already July? I probably say this every month but wow it feels like the year is passing by. So far the summer dramas have been great and there seems to be more great dramas to come. I’m still finishing up some of the dramas that ended in May/June but I’ll be caught up soon.

July seems to be the month of comebacks. Not kpop comebacks (although there have been some great ones). What I mean is, actors from shows earlier in the year are quickly coming back and staring in new shows. I don’t mind because most of these actors are talented, but it would be nice to see a new face.  I have a whole list of actors/actress that I would love to see take a starring role…

This is a list of shows I think are going to be good, and shows I think you should watch out for! The shows aren’t listed in any specific order.

Also I’ll be posting reviews and ranking the shows mentioned in my Upcoming June Kdrama post. I’m going to wait for a few more shows to finish before I write that.

King in love

July 17

Won, the crown prince of Goryeo, has a pretty appearance, but he also a lust for conquest. He is best friends with Rin who is a son from a royal family and his bodyguard. When beautiful San, the daughter of the richest man, appears in front of the two young men, the three become good friends, but things change after Won and Rin both fall in love with San.

This show staring Yoona, Im Shiwan, and Hong Jong Hyun is definitely on the top of most peoples list. I mean its being marketed and advertised EVERYWHERE! (slight exaggeration) For me its toward the bottom. Maybe second to last? The cast is no doubt selling the show. Its  been a while since we’ve seen Im Shiwan starring in a drama, Yoona and Hong Jong Hyun have been rising in success since staring in popular shows from early 2017. With all this, you may be wondering why I ranked it so low. The plot. I can’t stand the plot. After watching Strong Woman Bong Soon I stopped watching dramas with major love triangles. It’s annoying watching the poor 2nd lead (who obviously won’t get the girl) try so hard and get hurt in the end. Its even more annoying though watching the girl go back and forth between the two, and ruin what could’ve been a good bromance. I won’t be watching this once it airs, but maybe once it finishes I’ll give it a chance. I’ll just wait to see what other people say…

July 24

The drama is about the world where the truth has been turned upside-down, and a prosecutor and a journalist who aim to turn that world right-side up.

This show NEEDS to be on every persons list! As soon as you saw Nam Goong Min name on the cast list that should’ve been a HELL YEAH moment! Then again I will admit I am a bit biased. There isn’t much known about the plot so I can’t tell if its going to be a romance, comedy, drama, or suspenseful thriller. I enjoyed watching his comedic personality in Chief Kim, but I do hope his character is darker in this show. Uhm Ji Won is not a name I’m familiar with, so I don’t know what to expect. She’s stared in many movies over the past few years, but this will be her first drama since 2013. She’s around the same age as Goong Min, so I’m hoping for a mature romance (get your thoughts out of the gutter!), with adult drama and not that high school crap.

Criminal minds

July 26

Profilers investigate cases from the perspective of the criminals to solve the cases.

Sold. Criminal Minds is my favorite show (well that and Friends)  so you can’t even imagine how excited I was, when I saw that they were giving this show a Korean remake. Korea does very well with the detective and crime genre. I’m happy that this will be produced by TvN because many detective shows  produced by this company have been a success. I’m pretty sure this show won’t disappoint. The cast is filled with many familiar faces, but the person I’m most excited to see is, Moon Chae Won. I love her as an actress, but her last show Goodbye Mr. Black was disappointing. Hopefully this show will give her another chance to shine!

Strongest deliveryman

July 28

A relatable story about people born with “dirt spoons” in their mouths, aka underprivileged, everyday folk. The title is a pun on the main character’s name, Choi Kang-soo

Finally! The moment I have been waiting for! Go Kyung Pyo gets the lead role and the girl! I don’t understand how come it took so long to happen, but I’m not complaining. After watching such a great performance in Chicago Typewriter I was hoping to see him again soon. This show is going to show a different side to him though. In his most shows he’s been portraying the young, rich gentleman. In this show he’ll be playing a young, lower class citizen. Kyung Pyo doesn’t seem like a bad boy, but then again he might surprise us.

School of Magic

July 31

“School of Magic” is a drama that talks about the dreams, hopes, challenges, and failures that young people experience in life today.

This sounds like it’s going to be a great, down to earth, realistic story. Not much has been said about this show regarding the plot and airing date. Because of that I’ve basically been making a lot of assumptions. But even that is kind of hard. Don’t the name and description sound like complete opposites? School of Magic makes you think of Moorim School but the description sounds like Age of Youth. The cast is also filled with a unusual faces. Nickhun (2PM) was one of my very first K-pop bias, so no doubt I’ll be watching this show for him! I’ll be looking out for Jinyoung (GOT7) but you guys know who I’ll be focusing on.

Last minute romance

July 31

Other than being obsessed with top-star celebrities, Baek Se lives a relatively normal life, until she receives a diagnosis of terminal illness. Despite having tragic moments in her life as an orphan and having a terminal illness, she has a optimistic personality and works as part of the staff team in a suicide prevention counseling center. After she receives her diagnosis, she begins a contract relationship with Lee Seo Won’s character Dong Joon, who also happens to resemble her celebrity crush.

It always seems like the woman has to be diagnosed with the fatal disease. Do guys know any shows were the male lead is the sickly one? I guess writers do it like this because it’s more emotional.  I think.

The only cast that has been announced is the main leads. Han Seung Yeon will be playing the outgoing, bubbly heroine, and Lee Seo Won is our handsome hero. Seung Yeon is a great actress, so no doubt she will do a good job. Lee Seo Won is still an upcoming actor. He played a supporting role in The Liar and his Lover, so I might go check out that show just so I can catch a glimpse of him. I most likely won’t be watching this show until it ends. I have no clue if this will have a happy or sad ending. My poor heart can’t take sad endings. Well, unless I’m prepared, and am aware of them.
